America of Native American-colonizing relationships? This little book is a step toward that understanding by giving teachers something to expand their awareness and to use with their students. In teaching local geography and history, the material in this book can provide substance to avoid the stereotyped “Pocahontas-like” portrayals of these remarkable people. It is beautifully illustrated in detailed, delicate pencil drawings.

Games and stories are offered in English and Laḱota. A pronunciation guide is included, along with stories from the Laḱota tradition, a contemporary tale derived from experiences on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and a play, in both Laḱota and English, depicting the moving Laḱota legend of the Jumping Mouse.
